an arche takes its title from the Greek ἀν-αρχή — the negation of arche. Where arche names a first principle, a governing origin, a ruling force that determines and organises what follows from it, an-arche names the condition prior to and beneath any such principle: a state without ruler, without founding ground, without the kind of origin that commands. This is not chaos. It is the more unsettling condition of a ground that is itself groundless — what Reiner Schürmann, reading Heidegger, called ontological anarchy: the factor that simultaneously permits the emergence of any determination while refusing to be fixed as the stable foundation of that determination. An-arche is not the absence of order but the impossibility of locating the origin of order in any single, sovereign principle.

The piece inhabits this impossibility. It does not organise itself around pitch, harmony, or any of the governing principles through which Western instrumental music conventionally establishes its arche. Instead it works at the layer beneath those principles — the layer of raw physical contact between bow, string and body — where no single force is sovereign and where every apparent origin is already distributed, already multiple, already unstable. Bow pressure, string tension, contact point and the resistance of matter against the moving arm are not means toward musical meaning; they are the an-archic ground from which this piece refuses to depart.

The work is scored for one cello shared by three performers and quadraphonic sound diffusion. The three performers do not divide the instrument efficiently or practically. They embody three distinct modes of relation to its an-archic ground — three figures of agency operating without a common governing principle, each approaching the instrument from a different phenomenological position, none of them sovereign over the whole.

The First Performer — immediate corporeal force

A seated cellist who holds one bow in each hand simultaneously: right hand in the lower position near the bridge, left hand in the upper position near the fingerboard. This is the most immediate, least mediated presence in the work — the animal, bodily axis of the piece. The task is not to realise pitches or navigate harmonic structures but to inhabit a continuous field of pressure: to sustain, transform and destabilise friction between bow and string across the full length of the instrument. The double-bow setup allows two independent contact points and two independent pressure trajectories to coexist, often in contrary motion, contrary rotation or contrary pressure state.

The vocabulary is drawn entirely from the domain of physical force: bidirectional overpressure, contact-point glissando in contrary motion, sul ponticello tremolo against sul tasto overpressure, scratch tone alternating with silence, flautando at threshold pressure, dead bow against accelerando détaché, col legno battuto and tratto simultaneously, ricochet in rhythmic canon, bilateral circular bowing in contrary rotation. This performer does not “play” the cello in the conventional sense. They struggle with it, press against it, and are pressed back.

The Second Performer — structural intervention and scordatura

This performer operates at the level of condition rather than immediate gesture. Where the first is submerged in the physical present of friction, the second acts consciously on the conditions under which that friction produces sound, controlling scordatura in real time — retuning individual strings by specified amounts over specified time spans while the first performer continues bowing. These interventions do not interrupt the surface of the piece; they alter what the bows encounter without announcing themselves as events.

At selected moments this performer enters the first performer’s activity — placing a hand on strings, neck or tailpiece to produce chords, double stops and resonance configurations that the first performer, both hands occupied with bows, cannot independently realise. At others they play the body of the instrument rhythmically, imposing pulse, interference or rhythmic counterpoint on the continuous pressure field. The second performer is the reflective layer — the figure who surveys the situation from a slight distance and intervenes in its structural conditions with deliberate intent, without ever assuming full control.

The Third Performer — material transformation and preparation

Seated directly in front of the cello, facing the instrument, between it and the audience. This position is not incidental: this performer is inside the performance rather than adjacent to it, working on the instrument’s material surface as a continuous co-author of its identity.

Their function is to introduce, manipulate and remove some ten to fifteen physical preparations across the duration of the piece — an alligator clip on the afterlength, a glass slide against a string, a sponge block behind the bridge, a metal chain across the tailpiece, a strip of foil woven through the strings, a rubber superball held against the lower plate. These are not applied before the performance begins. They are applied, moved, altered and removed during the piece, so that preparation is not setup but action — musical time. What begins as an object placed on the instrument gradually becomes a playable element as the performer discovers how to activate, reposition and sound it. Preparations become instruments; the boundary between preparation and performance dissolves.

Spatial framework

The quadraphonic system extends the an-archic distribution of force into the room. Analysis of the first performer’s bowing — pressure density, spectral centroid, contact point, noise-to-tone ratio — drives diffusion and transformation in the loudspeaker space, so that the physical forces inscribed in the score become spatial events surrounding the audience. The acoustic cello and the electronic field are not separate layers; the electronic layer is the interior life of the acoustic surface made audible across the room.

The speaker layout — conventional square, immersive ring, or diagonal diamond — is chosen in consultation with the acoustics of the specific venue, with the consistent goal that no stable front, no sovereign source of sound and no fixed origin can be located. In the immersive ring configuration there is no stage: performers work at floor level, inside a single sector of the ring, in the same continuous space as the audience. The room, like the instrument, has no single arche.

Live machine listening — FluCoMa

The electroacoustic layer is realised in real time through FluCoMa (Fluid Corpus Manipulation) running in Max/MSP. The live cello signal is continuously analysed across loudness, spectral centroid, mel-frequency cepstral coefficients, onset detection and the noise-to-tonality ratio produced by the first performer’s pressure states. Five microphone zones feed it — bridge, fingerboard, lower bout, afterlength and a room channel — so that the double-bow dynamic can be analysed as independent streams with distinct timbral identities. The extracted features drive quadraphonic diffusion, corpus-based playback and transformation, and parameter mappings for filtering, convolution and spectral processing. The same analysis is routed as MIDI to a DMX system, so the light in the room is governed by the same pressure states as the sound.

The machine does not interpret the performance; it archives it continuously, matches incoming material against its own accumulating record, and responds from within that archive — a listener that acts from memory rather than intention.

This mechanism is not incidental to the conceptual framework. The FluCoMa system constitutes its own arche within the work: an archival, governing intelligence that organises the electronic layer according to principles derived entirely from the acoustic surface it observes. Yet this arche, like the others, is not sovereign. It does not compose, decide or control. It responds to conditions it did not set, using a corpus it did not choose, in a space shaped by performers whose actions it cannot predict. It is a principle of order that is itself ordered by something prior to it — the pressure of a bow, the resistance of a string, the decision of a hand. The machine listener becomes one more node in the plural, non-hierarchical field the piece proposes: a fourth agency without authority, an intelligence that archives but does not govern.

Notation

The first performer’s notation is written in proportional time with separate staves for each bow, using line thickness for pressure density, vertical position for contact region, and graphic symbols for gesture type and direction. The third performer reads a topographical clef: a cello diagram at the head of the system functions as a spatial rather than pitched staff, combined with pictograms for object type, location and timing, and a secondary staff for gestures made through those objects.

Before the first sound

Two bundles of Palo Santo are lit at two points in front of the performance zone and allowed to smoulder, releasing smoke slowly into the room throughout. The wood has been used for millennia across the Andes as a cleansing material, understood not symbolically but as an active agent that changes the conditions of a room and the people in it before any action has begun. Its perceptual effect is lateral rather than focused: the listener becomes more present, more permeable to subtle input, less defended against the ambiguous — which is the condition the piece requires.
