A music for people to relax

This composition for live electronics explores the paradox of relaxation in urban public spaces. It was created for Ensemble Ipse’s Flash Mass event, in which up to fifty composers’ works are presented simultaneously through Bluetooth speakers as a walking sound installation through Central Park.

The piece examines the ironic tension between parks as designated sites of rest and the conditions that actually surround them: the city that never stops, the crowd, the overlapping sound of forty-nine other pieces. Relaxation here is not a state the music provides but one it keeps failing to arrive at.
