Afterglare begins with the unusually concentrated spectral energy of the zurna. Rather than suppressing its penetrating upper spectrum, the piece treats this sharpness as a physical condition capable of becoming unstable. Long sustained tones are extended beyond their expected temporal scale. Upper partials are exposed, prolonged and separated until the apparently singular instrumental sound fragments.

Second piece of A Mechanics of Almost.
